Grant Description: Disabling Barriers awarded CTSR $7,080 to support their Work Exploration Paid Internship Program which helps youth with disabilities achieve meaningful, gainful employment, while connecting them to resources and services that will allow them to succeed in building their independence. “This grant will provide youth with disabilities the opportunity to receive paid work experience while cultivating independent living skills and learning the ins and outs of the employment process. Participating youth will also have the chance to create a foundation of life-long self-advocacy, the importance of their rights and responsibilities as an individual with a disability, and ultimately experience the joy of receiving their first hard-earned paycheck” (Alison Gervais, Independent Living Coordinator at CTSR).

Assistive Technology

Grant Description: Disabling Barriers awarded CPCD $5,000 making a direct impact on the lives of 200 young children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and special needs. This funding will provide crucial classroom materials and ongoing training for CPCD’s 15 therapists, including occupational, physical, and speech-language pathologists, and early childhood special educators. These dedicated professionals work tirelessly to prepare these children, many of whom have no other access to early childhood education, for kindergarten and beyond. CPCD partners with local school districts to deliver Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), ensuring that every child, regardless of their level of need, receives the support they deserve.

Mission Statement: Stillwater Music’s mission is to “build community through music education, performance, and play.” Since 2005, we’ve enacted this mission through youth and adult bands, early childhood programs, scholarships for kids from low income families or in foster care, and inclusive classes that bring together people with and without disabilities. All told, Stillwater serves about 700 kids and 150 adults every year in southwest Colorado.

Assistive Technology

Grant Description: Disabling Barriers awarded Stillwater Music $2,897 to provide equipment, mentoring and training costs for their two inclusive music programs, Shining Stars (for transitioning youth and adults) and Spark (for K-12 public school students). Since 2016, these programs have invited kids and adults with disabilities to create music and dance with their peers in a supportive and inclusive learning environment. “This grant will serve kids and adults with I/DDs in Southwest Colorado, a population with limited access to artistic and creative opportunities. Right now, Stillwater hosts Shining Stars classes for older teens and adults with I/DDs at our facility in Durango. This grant would equip Stillwater with more inclusive-trained instructors and additional class materials, increasing our capacity to serve the program across Southwest CO through partner agencies” (Casey Padron, Development Assistant at SM) .
